Key West counts 26,078 residents, and the 2023 estimate of 25,103 is down 5.1% from 2020, so a campaign cannot rely on resident volume alone. Those searches happen on the island itself or during trip planning, and ads that feel local, with a street name, a landmark and a person who picks up the phone, earn trust that a generic travel ad does not.
Residents live differently from visitors. Residents earn more and pay more: median household income is $80,828 where $67,722 is typical, the median home value is $814,200 where $297,700 is typical and median rent is $2,059 where $1,504 is typical. Only 1.8% of workers have a long commute, compared with 16.3% typical, and 9.3% work from home, so there is no rush hour to schedule around. Home-service and remodeling ads here tend to be high-ticket and local, and the landing page should show licensing, service area and a direct line.
Part-time owners add a distant audience. The county has 196 real estate agents and brokers, 24.3 for every ten thousand residents and 9.77 times the density of a typical county, plus 80 residential remodelers at 3.28 times typical, 52 electrical contractors at 2.88 times and 65 plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractors at 2.51 times. A small advertiser needs narrow service terms, a precise district and strong negative keywords for do-it-yourself and out-of-area searches.

Hospitality dominates the payroll: accommodation and food services employs 3,114 residents (21.4%), by far the largest share, followed by construction at 1,278 (8.8%), health care and social assistance at 1,231 (8.4%), retail trade at 1,115 (7.6%), transportation and warehousing at 1,024 (7%) and real estate and rental and leasing at 960 (6.6%). County officials say tourism accounts for more than 50 percent of jobs in Monroe County. Restaurants, hotels and tour operators advertise into the same visitor searches, so Google Ads in Key West rewards clear hours, one specific offer and a landing page that loads fast on a phone.
Several institutions anchor the rest of the economy. Naval Air Station Key West runs an air-to-air combat training field at Boca Chica, and its tenants include Joint Interagency Task Force South, Coast Guard Sector Key West and fighter squadrons. Key West International Airport opened a new passenger concourse with eight jet bridges in April 2025 and is served by American, Delta and United, and the Port of Key West has seen cruise ships since 1969, though the role of cruise visitors is publicly debated. Events and the sea fill in the calendar. The College of the Florida Keys is based in the city, Fantasy Fest brings a Halloween celebration, the Conch Republic Independence Celebration is held every April 23, and the island is a notable diving center near the Great Florida Reef.
